Why Custom Skincare Routines are Better for the Environment

The skincare industry is notoriously wasteful and non-eco-friendly. From overconsumption to the toxic ingredients put in skincare products to unsustainable practices, there are endless reasons as to why the skincare industry is hurting the environment. Custom skincare routines, however, can change that. By simplifying the process and focusing on clean, sustainable products, you can help the planet by going custom.

Simplifying your Options

We’ve all been there - standing in a beauty product store, completely lost while staring at a seemingly endless selection of products. There are hundreds of brands to choose from on the market and the hot trending product changes daily. Having too many options can lead to waste. You might try dozens of different products before actually finding the one or two that really work for your skin type and skin needs.

Furthermore, what works for one person might not work for another. If a friend has recommended their favorite product to you, it could be completely wrong for your skin. The cycle of experimentation that ensues leads to unused, thrown away, or returned products that eventually end up in landfills. It’s been reported that over 120 billion units of packaging are created for the beauty industry every year and approximately 79% end up in landfills.

A custom skincare routine simplifies the process. No longer are there dozens of products to choose from. Haldi creates a completely personalized skincare store for you based on your skin type, skin concerns, skin goals, and existing products. You end up with a customized routine, made up of 4-6 newly recommended products along with your existing products if you have any. Fewer options picked specifically for your skin means less experimentation and less waste.

Taking out Toxic Ingredients

Many of the ingredients in skincare products can be damaging to the environment. When these products end up in landfills or in oceans, they can harm animals and the local ecosystems. Parabens are a common preservative found in many cosmetics, but unfortunately they can cause reproductive issues in animals and even kill coral reefs. Other ingredients like sulfates and fragrance have been shown to be toxic and cause long term damage in marine animals.

When creating your custom skincare routine, Haldi helps you find out which of your products have toxic ingredients so you can stop using them. Haldi screens your existing products for “ingredient offenders”, including Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), plastic scrub beads, mineral oil, parabens, Methylisothiazolinone (MI), and Methylisothiazolinone (MCI). If you have a product with an ingredient offender, a replacement will be suggested in your new routine.

Haldi only sells clean products so you can feel better about the products and the ingredients you are putting on your face every day. This helps both you and the environment.

Focus on Sustainable Packaging

In an industry with excessive packaging and waste, it’s more important than ever to focus on brands that provide sustainable packaging. A majority of brands on the market focus on inexpensive packaging that unfortunately means dire effects on the environment. Plastic lasts forever and a majority (almost 91%!) doesn’t get recycled.

Haldi partners with brands who prioritize sustainability in creating their products. Ursa Major, for example, uses post-consumer recycled content when possible. Osea, a skincare brand based in Malibu, California, is Climate-Neutral certified and strives to minimize their carbon emissions from the recyclability of their packaging to using renewable energy in their office. Pai invested in bioplastic from sugarcane which is a renewable and sustainable source of packaging. These brands, among many others, recognize that sustainability matters. They can have the biggest impact in helping skincare users have eco-friendly routines.

When you fill out the skin quiz to get your custom routine, you can request sustainable skincare packaging, or be more specific and request exclusively glass packaging or refillable bottles. These choices start with you and can make a big difference down the line.
